Front cover Estudines for Guitar

Sustained sonority This is a relaxed mastery of guitar writing: guitars are made for these kinds of intervals: after this, I have listened to my last IV-V-I. Guitar pieces are shared by parts for two reasons: either the added parts support the original solo, or there is just so much to be heard in the original part that the only way to physically realise it is to expand it until the original vision is fulfilled. The latter case seems to be the reason for this piece - it seems too homogenous throughout to originate in any other way. Of course, I could be completely wrong, but what does that matter: the mood is set from the first bar, and after this any conventional compulsion for theme and development, etc, is irrelevant. The internal structure is instantly implied, and flows naturally from start to end. There is no filler, no extraneous run or trill, no lack of focus, no teabreak, no distraction. This piece needs to be heard / recorded live to realise the heart of it. I'm happy to wait.

Croydon Festival of Music & Drama    ‘There were only 10 entrants in the end but this gave us the opportunity to run a really effective workshop with the kids which added real value, I think. Normally kids will perform, the adjudicator will make some comments and it's all off home afterwards. Lee Sollory, last night's adjudicator, came up with the fantastic idea of holding a workshop afterwards so that he could demonstrate more effectively some of the reasons behind comments made. Gratifyingly, every entrant who turned up stayed on for the workshop and I feel this is a real way forward for the Festival. Of course it depends on the adjudicator whether the workshop is effective, but if you get someone like Lee Sollory, who was simply brilliant, everyone benefits so much more.'
